Congratulations! You’re a new mom! It doesn’t get more exciting than that! As your days fill with the wonder and delight of your little one, you also need to be thinking about yourself, and how your body is recovering from your pregnancy and delivery.
Given the impact of the last nine months of your pregnancy, and the birth experience – whether it was a natural or assisted birth, or a C-section – your pelvic floor area has been affected. This includes the muscles, ligaments and connective tissues located between the hip bones and the sacrum, otherwise known as the tailbone.

Steps to a faster recovery
Having the support of one of our pelvic floor physiotherapists can lead to a faster recovery. The physiotherapist will examine you, evaluate your pelvic floor muscles and determine whether they’re at the root of any post-partum symptoms you’re experiencing. If so, the physiotherapist will recommend the appropriate treatment.
Pelvic floor exercises help with urinary leakage – a common problem.
It’s very common for a new mom to experience urinary leakage, especially when engaging in active exercise. But even moderate movement like laughing, sneezing and coughing can cause embarrassing leakage. This problem does not always resolve itself with time. But the good news is that treatment is available through pelvic floor physiotherapy. Keeping the pelvic floor muscles strong is the key to bladder control.
At Stay Active Rehabilitation, a pelvic floor physiotherapist will assess the condition of your pelvic floor muscles and determine the right treatment for you. This might include Kegel exercises, which are designed to strengthen pelvic muscles.
Your physiotherapist will explain how Kegel exercises work, provide you with specific routines designed for your particular needs, and suggest how to make them part of your daily life. The beauty of these exercises is that you can do them in the gym or at home; but it’s important to follow the routine given you, and do them correctly, in order to use the right muscle groups. If you’re finding them too easy, you may not be benefiting from them, and need to make them more challenging. Your physiotherapist can guide you through this process, and help you make any needed adjustments.
